Even when you're not actively using your phone, apps and services can use mobile data in the background. Before you travel, there are a few settings worth checking to help make your easySim data go further.
iPhone
If you're using an iPhone with your easySim eSIM, we'd recommend checking the following settings.
1. Turn off Wi-Fi Assist
Wi-Fi Assist can automatically use mobile data when your Wi-Fi connection is poor.
Go to:
Settings > Mobile Service > Wi-Fi Assist > OFF
This can help prevent your iPhone from quietly switching to mobile data when you're connected to a weak Wi-Fi network.
2. Check which apps and services can use mobile data
Your iPhone lets you control which apps can use mobile data.
Go to:
Settings > Mobile Service
Scroll down to see which apps can use mobile data and switch off access for any apps you don't need while travelling.
It's particularly worth checking photo syncing, cloud storage and other apps that may transfer large amounts of data in the background.
3. Turn on Low Data Mode
Low Data Mode helps reduce mobile data usage by limiting some automatic updates and background activity.
Go to:
Settings > Mobile Service > tap your easySim eSIM > Low Data Mode > ON
This is particularly useful when you're travelling with a limited data allowance.
Android
Android phones vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and version of Android, but there are some useful settings you can check.
1. Make sure Google Play updates use Wi-Fi only
Open the Google Play Store and go to:
Profile picture > Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps > Over Wi-Fi only
This helps prevent app updates from using your easySim data allowance.
2. Check your phone's mobile data settings
It's also worth checking which apps are allowed to use mobile data in the background.
Look for your phone's Mobile Data, Data Usage or App Data Usage settings. From there, you can identify apps that are using significant amounts of data and restrict background data where appropriate.
Cloud photo backups, file synchronisation and automatic updates are particularly worth checking.
